Frozen The Musical is the stage adaptation of Disney’s 2013 animated film Frozen. The musical tells the story of princesses Elsa and Anna, who only had each other after the death of their parents. Elsa has powerful magical powers that enable her to create ice. Unfortunately, Elsa views her powers as a curse more than a blessing, especially when she accidentally hurt Anna when they were young. Luckily, her parents were able to save her sister with the help of a hidden folk community led by Grand Pabbie.
“Tony-winning director Michael Grandage refines Frozen by putting the focus on emotion first. The bond between the sisters effectively and literally takes the spotlight. Doubters may just have their heart thawed.” – Entertainment Weekly.
“The hottest show on Broadway!” – Vanity Fair.
The two princesses often played together as children, but the accident drew them apart. But Anna never gave up on trying to win her older sister. On the other hand, Elsa remains reclusive and refuses to come out of her room. During Elsa’s coronation day, the two sisters finally got to see each other. Small and awkward talks filled the air, but Anna was ecstatic nonetheless. However, things escalate when Anna meets a young prince during the celebration and decides to marry him. Appalled by the sudden engagement, Elsa argues with Anna and unintentionally exposes her powers during the process. She also accidentally caused an eternal winter in Arrendelle. Ashamed of her powers, Elsa runs away from the kingdom. However, Anna wants her sister to come back. Thus, she embarks on a journey into the wilderness. Will Anna be able to get Elsa back?
Frozen, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale titled Snow Queen, has one of the most beloved storylines of the decade. The film sets itself apart by portraying the love between sisters and family. Frozen was one of the most successful animated films of the decade, grossing over $1.28 billion and receiving multiple awards and nominations.
Due to the film’s monster success, the stage adaptation took some time to conceptualize and execute. The CEO of Walt Disney, Bob Iger mentioned that the theater version took a while to formalize due to the standards set by the film. During an interview, Disney Theatrical Group president Tom Schumacher said, “We’re demanding excellence. The priority is when you have something beloved and music-based as Frozen, that has to get an enormous amount of my attention.” The animated film was created with young viewers in mind. This time, the producers were challenged with the goal of making the adaptation sophisticated and appropriate for adult evening theater.
Of course, the stage adaptation of an award-winning musical deserves an award-winning creative team. The musical was met with incredibly high expectations. Therefore, the producers recruited only the best. The original production in Denver brought in multi-award-winning writer and director Alex Timbers. Meanwhile, the esteemed Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez were recruited to write music and lyrics. For music supervision, Tony Award winner Stephen Oremus was tapped by producers to help bring Frozen’s already incredible music to even more impressive heights. Lastly, award-winning choreographer Peter Darling, whose credits include Billy Elliot The Musical, also joined the creative team.
Disney’s Frozen The Musical opened on Broadway in 2018 at St. James Theater. Award-winning director Michael Grandage led the New York production. Another award-winning choreographer Rob Ashford was brought in to replace Peter Darling. In 2019, the production went on tour in the U.S. but was suspended due to the pandemic. In 2021, Frozen opened in London’s West End, followed by the continuation of the U.S. tour. This 2023, Frozen The Musical covers all major cities in North America.
All productions feature Frozen’s fantastic score, which includes the colossal hits “Let It Go,” “Do You want to Build a Snowman,” “For the First Time in Forever,” and “Love is An Open Door.” There are also several new songs written, especially for the musical. Frozen received wide critical acclaim from professional critics. New York Magazine described Frozen as a “theatrical extravaganza that delivers. There are screams, cheers, tears, and the effect is genuinely electric!”
Frozen The Musical, written and produced to cater to adult audiences, has less cartoonish appeal than the film. Critics find this refreshing and relatable. Time Out’s Andrzej Lukowski mentioned, “It’s a thoughtful, attractive and human spin that manages to balance a Drury Lane-size spectacle with recognizing what audiences want from ‘Frozen.’ Lukowski added that the musical subtly leans close to The Snow Queen, “If the film is a pre-school classic, the musical is maybe a couple years more grown-up.” Lukowski ended his review with the statement, “Its most magical moments will wow every age group.”
The musical’s impressive set design also caught the attention of other writers. Newsday’s critic praised Frozen for its remarkable visual presentation, “It will give you chills! Amazing special effects, eye-popping costumes, and incredible performances.”
