How deep can you dig to find happiness, in a life that is so deliberately is trying to prove you wrong? The story of Kimberly Akimbo, might just be all about that, and more. Written at the start of the millennium by the award-winning David Lindsay-Abaire, Kimberly Akimbo is a performance that tells the classic story of Time, Identity, and Resilience.
Kim is a intellegent, funny, and determined Jersey Teen, with, A disorder that made her look like a 72-year-old lady, making her physical age 4x older than she is. Directed by Jessica Stone, the cast starred Victoria Clark as Kimberly, with Justin Cooley, and more. The performance has won several prestigious awards including 5 Tony Awards!
The 2h 30m show, which made its debut on Broadway in 2022, is about the quest of a standard teenager, with an a rare condition, going through ordinary high school experiences. Such as her first love, dynamic family, and identity crises. Presented by the prestigious Orpheum Theatre, the show is debuting in Omaha, on Wednesday 12th February 2025. The performance marries the two polarities of a teenager, one struggling with unreal aging issues, and the other as an ordinary teen going through her phases.
The musical has the ability to bring an amotional journey to the audience by fusing self reflection, and judgement, regarding one’s life point of view and the strength to challenge suffering. While packing so many life lessons secretly, the show can also be LOL funny, and dark! Kimberly uses her humor as a coping mechanism for life and much of the emotional burden that was unfairly placed on her shoulders.
Kimberly’s most intimate relationship is with her friend Jeff, a sophomore in high school, a wordsmith, and socially awkward yet seems to confide well with Kimberly, mostly because of their innocent and emotional complexity. Apart from her posetive relationship with Jeff, one can hardly say more, her mother “Pattie”, is a hypochondriac, frequently distant and emotionally unavailable often seeming to be caught up with her drama. “Buddy” Kimberly’s father is an heavy drinker who usually fails to demonstrate a good father figure, and then there is “Aunt Debra” self centered con-artist, who’s entire interest was pulling successful plots at any cost.
Don’t undermine the show by the coloring, and braces, Kimberly Akimbo can take you on an emotional rollercoaster, of sadness, inspiration, humor, and hope, all at once. This masterpiece will join the gathering in the fabulous Omaha, on Wednesday 12th February 2025, at the splendid Orpheum Theatre. Secure your spot now, and enjoy some good old Broadway at just $45.
