Some Like It Hot at Orpheum Theatre

Set in Chicago during Prohibition when jazz music was all the rage, "Some Like It Hot" draws similarities to another famous Broadway show, Chicago. Jazz elements influence the entire show as the main characters, Joe and Jerry, are struggling musicians trying to survive on speakeasy performances. Their lives face a comical turn wrench when they witness a gangster committing a crime in their mob-controlled speakeasy and need to begin cross-dressing to protect their identities as new criminal targets. 

Joe reinvents himself as Josephine, while Jerry transforms into Daphne and the two join an women-only swing band. The band's singer Sugar Kane becomes a integral part of their tale as the two men attempt to earn her affection without blowing their cover. The adventure each character tests their strengths and teaches them unexpected lessons about themselves. 

If the story sounds familiar, it's because "Some Like It Hot" is a Broadway adaptation of the 1959 film of the same name, which starred film icons Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe. The movie itself was based on the 1953 French movie Fanfare of Love and has since become one of the most culturally relevant movies of all time. The movie earned three Golden Globe Awards and one Academy Award and was selected for the first class of 25 movies chosen by the US National Film Registry for preservation.

The film's notable success led it to become the inspriation for the 1972 Broadway show "Sugar", and multiple theatre productions in the 1990s. Then on to the 2022 Broadway adaptation. Audiences can't get enough of the show and rush to secure tickets for showings at Orpheum Theatre and others across the country. "Some Like It Hot" features showtunes by Marc Shaiman and Marc Wittman, the duo behind other hit musicals like "Hairspray" and "Catch Me If You Can." 

The production includes energetic dance numbers and truely lovable songs like "I'm California Bound," "Baby, Let's Get Good," and "Zee Bap." The original Broadway cast earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for their recording of the show's soundtrack.
