History and Awards
Clue is based on the murder mystery board game of the same name. Created in 1943 by British board game designer Anthony E. Pratt, Clue has relaunched and updated a number of times, and it is currently owned and published by the American game and toy manufacturer Hasbro. The object of the game is to find out who murdered the game’s victim, where the murder took place, and with what weapon. Each player takes on the role of one of the six suspects and tries to arrive at the correct answer by strategically moving around the game board which represents the rooms of a mansion. As they move around the board, players collect clues about the events of the murder from the other players.
Games magazine included Clue in their Top 100 Games of 1980, celebrating it as “still the classic detective game”, while Top 100 Games of 1981 said (“[the] characters in this 32-year-old game have become household words”), and Top 100 Games of 1982 affirmed (“Millions love this classic mystery game”). The game was such a hit, that the Cluedo franchise has since released several games, books, a movie, television series, and stage adaptations. The popular Paramount Pictures movie landed in 1985, and just like the game, it was an international sensation!
The screenplay for the movie was adapted for stage performances in 2017 by the original screenwriter Jonathan Lynn, arriving at Bucks County Playhouse that year. The show was directed by Hunter Foster and featured Sally Struthers and Erin Dilly. In 2020, Sandy Rustin created a revised adaptation which incorporated material from Hunter. Her adaptation was praised as “a welcome throwback to an era of physical comedy”. Fast forward to 2024, and Clue embarked on a national tour directed by Casey Hushion.
