History

The 1904 original production that inspired the musical rendition dove into tricky concepts of adult responsibilities versus imaginative childhood innocence. The musical explores similar elements while bringing a fresh enchantment and modern flair compared to the 1954 original, which still earned a Tony Award the following year.

Influential actress Mary Martin’s leading performance is an important part of the plays widespread success. Her gender-bending role as Peter Pan was a cornerstone of progress at the time. That show continued snagging Tonys and a Drama Desk award from 1980 through 1999. The 1960 film recording would also enshrine the story and bring the musical to home televisions.
