“A HOWLINGLY FUNNY HEARTBREAKER OF A SHOW.” – The New Yorker
Synopsis
Kimberly Akimbo is a Tony Award-winning Best Musical that is all about growing up and getting old — in no particular order. The tale follows a teenager hailing from New Jersey who lives with a rare aging disease that makes her look 72 years old. The production explores the challenges of a stereotypical youth, including first love, dysfunctional families, and the desire to fit in.
Kimberly Lavaco (played by Carolee Carmello) is a clever and funny teen who gets to grips with family secrets, borderline personalities, and even the odd felony charge. The teen’s condition is akin to a real disease known as progeria, which causes the body to age rapidly. Kimberly’s family includes a dad that’s rarely sober, a mom who is a hypochondriac, and an aunt who is a scam-artist. The show sees Kimberly form a connection with a teenage boy. But, their relationship is complicated by her declining health condition. The smash hit musical includes catchy hits, such as “Better”, “Anagram”, and “The Inevitable Turn”.
“The season’s most moving new musical earns its place among the behemoths of Broadway” – The New York Times
